Seniors at ABHOW’s newest affordable housing communities proudly welcomed guests during October grand opening celebrations in San Ramon, Calif., and Tacoma, Wash.
State and local officials, developers and residents gathered on Oct. 6 for the dedication of Salishan Gardens in Tacoma, and on Oct. 26 for the dedication of Valley Vista in San Ramon. The new communities are exceptional additions to ABHOW’s growing affordable housing portfolio. The company now manages 30 communities in California and Washington.
“It was a great opportunity for me to experience a beautiful afternoon and visit with those who made it possible for the community to even be built,” says Mae Hill, a resident of Valley Vista since its opening in May and a speaker at the dedication there. “I felt that those behind the project were really interested in having something nice for the seniors of San Ramon, that their heart was really in it.”
Located just a half-hour’s drive from San Francisco, Valley Vista is San Ramon’s first affordable community exclusively for seniors. The community, with 105 one- and two-bedroom apartments, boasts year-round views of nearby Mt. Diablo. The project was co-developed by ABHOW and Satellite Housing.
In the heart of downtown Tacoma's revitalized Salishan neighborhood, Salishan Gardens is an urban oasis for seniors. Development of the sustainably built, three-story community played a key role in the city’s $225 million Salishan redevelopment project. The 55-apartment community was co-developed by ABHOW and Beacon Development.
Salishan Gardens and Valley Vista were filled when they opened to residents in the spring, and maintain significant waiting lists. They were designed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability, resident safety and comfort.
“Both of these communities represent the ABHOW philosophy in action,” says Ancel Romero, senior vice president for affordable housing. “With each affordable housing community we manage, we strive to give our residents the safest and most comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy active and vibrant lives.”

Residents of both communities were proud to show off their new homes at the October grand opening events. Valley Vista residents told visitors they felt like they were living in a fine hotel complete with breathtaking views. And at Salishan Gardens, residents expressed their gratitude at being part of the Tacoma neighborhood’s rebirth. The Valley Vista grand opening proved to be a high-spirited event for all involved.
“When the residents moved in, they were very interested in meeting the owner or the one who was responsible for giving them this precious gift,” says Corinne Jepsen, Salishan Gardens administrator. “On Oct. 6, they realized it wasn’t one person so much as it was a mission.”
ABHOW President and CEO David Ferguson says that both communities demonstrate ABHOW’s goal to set a new standard for high-quality affordable housing.
“Part of what makes our affordable housing communities exceptional places to live is the spirit of community,” says Ferguson. “Salishan Gardens blends into the [surrounding] neighborhood and into downtown Tacoma so seamlessly. And as a proud Tri-Valley corporate neighbor, we see Valley Vista as an investment in our own community.”
